Bluewater Spearfishing
Posted by Venture Wetsuits on
Bluewater spearfishing can be the most boring type of spearfishing at times. Unlike reef diving where there is a lot more life swimming around and nice corals to look at. Blue water is all about patience and capitalizing on opportunity. We normally spearfish blue water less than 300ft of water. Other places we go deeper, a lot deeper! Drop your flashers, drop some chum and sit and wait. Most times chumming you'll invite a few land lords (sharks) up your chum line. On Oahu, we target Mahi, Ono (Wahoo), Shibi (an Ahi that is less than 100 lbs) and...
General Maintenance on Penn Fishing Reels
Posted by Venture Wetsuits on
As a kid I grew up surfing and fishing and didn't really get into spearfishing until right out of high school. Mainly I was dunking and whipping. Although I didn't catch too often I always enjoyed throwing out the lines while hanging out with family and friends. I can clearly remember my first Ugly Stick fishing pole and Penn Fishing Reel. Because it was what I grew up, it's still what I use today. As I started to learn different techniques such as jigging and plugging I still kept to the ugly stick and Penn Reel combo. Gary introduced me...
The Lost Files: First Dive Trip
Posted by Venture Wetsuits on
The first dive trip I went on with the Venture Crew was memorable nonetheless. We ran into some of the dumbest fish on some of the most untouched grounds. For whatever reason, the photos and videos from this trip back in 2016 was uploaded on a thumb drive and misplaced. Up until now I was able to find all the lost footage and photos from an epic trip with the boys.
Chasing Bird Piles - First Time Using GoFish Cam

I got a call from Uncle Kurt to go trolling. A lot of Ahi have been coming up so we thought we try our luck out on the water. We found rubbish and a lot of bird piles that we chased for miles. I also got to test out my new GoFishCam and was lucky enough to catch a split second of a hook up! Unfortunately I have yet to get that Ahi monkey off my back but it was nice to hear that reel sing on a Ono. Lure: https://amzn.to/3ipaSVI I can't wait to get more footage using the GoFishCam...
Changing Your Speargun Bands
Posted by Venture Wetsuits on
After many dives, many misses & many fish landed you'll eventually have to change your bands on your speargun. You can take it to local dive shop or you can do it yourself once you have all the proper rigging gear. If you're like me, I don't know how to tie my bands good so I called up the boys to kick it and had Troy (@tkmaeda) tie them for me, but at the same time teach me in detail how to change my bands. Next time i'll have to give it a try myself. A message from Troy: *This...
