Moʻolelo — Spearfishing

The Giant Trevally, also known as Ulua in Hawai'i, is the king of the reef. One of the fiercest predators and the most prized sought after fish by both fisherman and spear fisherman. Nesting in caves with their dark skin and scales, you catch hints of silver as the orange sun shines down on its battle scars which is what we have captured in this wetsuit. The crew decided to dive out on the East Side of Oahu in hopes for some clean water and a lot of fish. The weather projected to be good, but that morning the winds had already picked up. Luckily we brought the poles because all the inside shallower spots were very murky. We went into deeper grounds where Ryan ran into a Ulua Slob and I sobbed as a 60+ Ono swims away from me.   Bluewater spearfishing can be the most boring type of spearfishing at times. Unlike reef diving where there is a lot more life swimming around and nice corals to look at. Blue water is all about patience and capitalizing on opportunity. We normally spearfish blue water less than 300ft of water. Other places we go deeper, a lot deeper!  Drop your flashers, drop some chum and sit and wait. Most times chumming you'll invite a few land lords (sharks) up your chum line. On Oahu, we target Mahi, Ono (Wahoo), Shibi (an Ahi that is less than 100 lbs) and...

The first dive trip I went on with the Venture Crew was memorable nonetheless. We ran into some of the dumbest fish on some of the most untouched grounds.  For whatever reason, the photos and videos from this trip back in 2016 was uploaded on a thumb drive and misplaced. Up until now I was able to find all the lost footage and photos from an epic trip with the boys.
